Is a Champagne day trip worth it?

For anyone who likes wine, yes. Just know what you are buying: a long day, about four hours of it on the road from Paris, and six to nine glasses in chalk cellars and village kitchens.

A Champagne day trip costs more than a museum and takes longer than Versailles. What you get for it is hard to copy in Paris: cellars dug centuries ago, the vines in front of you, and growers who pour their own wine. UNESCO listed the hillsides, houses and cellars in 2015.

This guide does the sums honestly: what a tour costs against doing it yourself, how many hours go on travel, what happens to the bottles you buy, and who would be happier spending the day in Paris.

The quick answer

Worth it if you like wine and have a full day. Cheapest good-value option: the train to Reims plus the three family domains day ($286 plus your train). Easiest: the day trip with 8 tastings from your hotel ($364). Skip it if you only want a glass of champagne, or cannot face a 10-hour day.

Is it worth going to Champagne, France?

Yes, if you like wine or chalk-cellar history. The cellars, the vineyards and the growers are things a Paris wine bar cannot give you.

The UNESCO site covers three parts: the hillsides of Hautvillers, Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Saint-Nicaise hill in Reims, and the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay. Stand in a cellar 30 m down, where bottles rest for at least 15 months by appellation rules (36 for vintages), and the price on the label starts to make sense.

The growers are the other half. Guests on the family tours keep mentioning the people more than the wine. monica, after the afternoon tour: “Fabulous informative, knowledgeable guide. Small group. The history, tastings, meeting the owners seeing vineyards [...]”

Can you do Champagne as a day trip from Paris?

Easily. Every option fits in a day, from a 4.5-hour afternoon tour after the train to a 13-hour day with hotel pickup.

The question is how much of the day you spend moving.

Is a tour or DIY cheaper for a Champagne day trip?

DIY is cheaper: a return train from about €30 and two house visits from €60. A tour costs more but adds the vineyards, the growers and the driving.

What a day costs per person, 2026 prices. Tour prices are in US dollars on GetYourGuide; trains and house visits in euros.

Train ranges run from two advance €15 tickets to two €27 to €28 tickets, the common fares on SNCF Connect in late October 2026. On your own, you will see big-house cellars but no vineyards: there is no train to Hautvillers or the grower villages.

What do you miss if you go to Champagne on your own?

The vineyards and the growers. Trains stop in towns, the villages have no station, and France's 0.5 g/l drink-drive limit makes self-driving a tasting day hard.

On your own you can do Reims well: the cathedral, Pommery or Mumm, lunch, and back on the TGV. You can do Épernay well too, with Moët and the tasting bars on the Avenue. What you cannot do without a car is reach Hautvillers, the hillside viewpoints or a grower's kitchen, and if you drive, someone stays sober (the limit is 0.5 g/l, 0.2 for new drivers).

The hybrid is the sweet spot for us: train to Reims, a guide in a van for the vineyard part. Guests on the afternoon tour mention the guides by name again and again. Maree: “Great afternoon. Our guide Zoe was super helpful and knew so much about champagne making. [...]”

Is champagne cheaper in Épernay?

Not reliably. House boutiques charge full price, and a bottle of Moët Impérial cost about €42 in a French supermarket in late 2025. Buy the grower bottles you cannot find at home.

UFC-Que Choisir found Moët Impérial Brut at €41.93 at a Super U in its November 2025 test. A house shop on the Avenue will not undercut a French supermarket on its own big-label brut. Where Champagne does pay off is the small producer: bottles sold at the cellar door that rarely reach shops abroad.

Our rule: taste first, then buy one or two bottles you liked from a grower, not the label you can get in any airport. Evelyn, on the e-bike tour: “The champagne tasting at La Clos de Corbier was excellent. [...]”

How much champagne can you bring home?

Into the UK, 18 litres of wine, sparkling included: 24 bottles. Into the US, 1 litre duty-free, more with duty. Within the EU, up to 60 litres of sparkling wine is a guide level.

A 75 cl bottle is three-quarters of a litre, so the US limit is one bottle with a little room spare. GOV.UK showed an update on 23 October 2026 without changing these figures; check again before you travel.

How do you carry champagne bottles home?

In checked luggage if you fly, wrapped in clothes or a wine sleeve. On Eurostar, unopened bottles are fine in your bag.

Most airports still limit hand-luggage liquids to 100 ml. In the UK, airports with new scanners such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh and Birmingham take containers up to 2 litres, but Which? reports that Luton and Manchester still enforce 100 ml, and so do many EU airports. Both ends of your flight count. Bubbles add a risk: a bottle under pressure can burst if it is crushed, so pad it well and keep it in the middle of the case.

Eurostar is happy for you to bring unopened bottles to your destination; it only limits what you drink on board. For a case or more, ask the shop about shipping before you pay.

Who should skip a Champagne day trip?

Wheelchair users on most tours, non-drinkers, families with young children, and anyone who hates a 10-hour day in a van.

  • Wheelchair users: the 8 tastings day, the sommelier tour, the private Veuve Clicquot trip and the domains day all list themselves as not suitable. Moët & Chandon has a lift and a wheelchair entrance, so a train to Épernay and a Moët visit is the accessible route.
  • Young children: the 8 tastings day is not for under-4s, the afternoon and e-bike tours start at 12, and under-18s get grape juice.
  • Pregnant travellers: the Land Rover ride is not suitable, and tasting days lose their point.
  • People who hate long days: pick the afternoon tour, or skip it.

Everyone else: go. Kathryn, after the domains day: “Fabulous! Alvera, our guide, made a day that was expected to be fun even more fun. [...]”
